Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. envoy for Afghanistan, was hopeful as he spoke to reporters on Saturday about the outcome of the peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
The Afghan-American diplomat said the United States is encouraging both sides to “move as quickly as possible” toward a resolution, calling it a “historic opportunity” for both sides.
Members of the Taliban and delegates appointed by the Afghan government are meeting in Qatar, with negotiations aimed at bringing an end to a decades-long war.
