A strong defensive first half followed by an offensive explosion in the second half led Duke to a 103-47 victory over Arizona State in the Brotherhood Run, a charity exhibition to benefit Duke Children's Hospital.
Kon Knueppel led all scorers with 19 points while Khaman Maluach reeled in a game-high 12 caroms. Duke had six players finish in double-figures, with Knueppel joined by Caleb Foster (17), Sion James (13), Darren Harris (10), Mason Gillis (10) and Tyrese Proctor (10).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The freshman duo of Khaman Maluach and Cooper Flagg opened the scoring for Duke, as Maluach slammed home an alley-oop dunk and Flagg finished a layup through contact. Caleb Foster got in on the scoring while Flagg and Maluach added another bucket each, giving Duke a 10-4 advantage at the first media timeout.
A six-point burst by Duke, highlighted by a one-handed slam by Maluach, pushed the lead to double digits, 18-8, with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
Duke's first three-pointer of the contest, via Caleb Foster, came with just over nine minutes before the halftime break and edged the Blue Devils ahead, 21-8.
Back-to-back three-pointers by the Sun Devils triggered a Duke timeout with 3:06 on the clock in the opening frame, with Duke still in front, 30-17. At the intermission, Duke led by 16, 37-21, as the Blue Devils' defense held Arizona State to just 7-of-28 (.250) shooting from the field in the opening frame.
Duke exploded for 10 of the first 12 points of the second half, capped by back-to-back triples from Knueppel – forcing a timeout by the visitors at the 16:48 mark of the second half with the Blue Devils up by 24, 47-23.
Knueppel converted a four-point-play, and the Blue Devils forced a turnover on the next possession, leading to a Proctor three-pointer, pushing Duke's scoring run to 15 unanswered in a two-minute stretch. Duke's seventh three-pointer of the second half, from Sion James, made it a 67-31 lead shortly before the under-12 media timeout.
Five more three-pointers, from Foster, James and Darren Harris, gave Duke a 47-point lead, 84-37, with eight minutes remaining.
James got into double-figures as the second half wore on and Spencer Hubbard capped Duke's scoring with a layup in the final two minutes, closing out the 103-47 victory.
NOTES
In the opening 20 minutes, Duke held Arizona State to 25% shooting from the field (7-of-28), including 15% from 3-point range (2-of-13), limiting the Sun Devils to 21 first-half points.
The Blue Devils connected on 44% (15-of-34) from the floor in the first half to take a 37-21 lead into the locker room.
Duke exploded from long distance in the second half, draining 15-of-23 (65.2%) from 3-point range after intermission, contributing to the Blue Devils' 66 second-half points.
After shooting 1-for-5 from the field in the first half, including three misses from behind the arc, Kon Knueppel made 5-of-6 shots in the second half, going 4-for-5 on 3-pointers, to finish with a game-high 19 points. The freshman added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Caleb Foster tallied 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting with three triples, along with three helpers and two steals.
Sion James also made three 3-pointers, leading to 13 points, and distributed three assists.
Khaman Maluach secured a game-best 12 rebounds, scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and swatted two shots.
The Blue Devils amassed 25 assists out of 38 made baskets and committed just seven turnovers.
Duke forced the Sun Devils into 18 turnovers, which led to 26 points.
The Blue Devils out-scored Arizona State 38-14 in the paint and 17-0 on the fast break.
Duke shot 53.5% (38-of-71) from the field on the night, while holding ASU to 28.1% (16-of-57) shooting from the floor.
