The Anti-Ableism Series
Part 199
Many of our disabled friends were at the @whitehouse for a belated celebration of the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Let’s explore some ways the current administration has supported the disability community (and room for progress).
Last month, @potus signed the Inflation Reduction Act—here are a few ways it impacts the disability community, including lowering the cost of prescription drugs and investing in combatting climate change.
Video description/transcript: Tiffany is a Taiwanese American woman speaking to the camera. “Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people? Last month, President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act. There were a few wins for the disability community, like providing financial relief to the millions of older adults and people with disabilities who are struggling to afford the life-saving drugs they need and deserve. And because climate change disproportionately affects disabled people, this is the largest investment in combating climate change in U.S. history. There’s also room for progress. The final legislation did not include a provision that would have banned the use of quality-adjusted-life-year (QALY) assessments in Medicare, a metric that the metric devalues the life of and discriminates against disabled people. While we’re celebrating these wins, we’re also acknowledging that there is still a lot of room for progress. Visit healthcare.gov to see what discounts you may qualify for.”
