Not a fan of the classics? If you're like me, you tend to gravitate to genre fiction over that of literary fiction, but today I have a classic must-read for you. It's a satire book, a novella titled Candide by Voltaire which was first published in France in 1759.
Francois-Marie Arouet, aka Voltaire, was a French philosopher and writer who was centuries ahead of his time, and he was known as one of the leaders of the French Enlightenment. The themes in Candide include slavery, the senseless tragedies wrought by natural disasters, religious indoctrination, war, the role of government, and even blind optimism in the face of life's hardships.
Even if your thing is sci-fi/fantasy or grimdark literature, I think you'll get a lot out of Candide. Let me know what you think!
