A monstrous beast, a furious king, and terrorized peasants— there’s something mythical about this episode in history. The facts of the case are that between 1764-1767, something killed over a hundred people in the rural French province of Gévaudan. The French simply referred to it as La Bête, the Beast. Here, we cover the gruesome attacks, attempts to hunt the Beast, and competing theories regarding its identity. It's one of those periods in history that has left footprints all across popular culture, from Witcher story lines to werewolf lore.
