I wrote and recorded music to Walt Whitman's poem "O Captain! My Captain!" to help people memorize it.
The poem was written in 1865 and is in the public domain. Whitman wrote the poem in honor of Abraham Lincoln after he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. In 1867 Whitman added the poem to the 4th edition his book, "Leaves of Grass".
