The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (UINP) has released a historical video from the series "Epochal Events", dedicated to the Holodomor of 1932–1933.
The Holodomor genocide of 1932–1933, orchestrated by Stalin’s communist regime, aimed to crush Ukrainian resistance, erase Ukrainian identity, and eradicate the memory of Ukrainian statehood. It sought to turn farmers into collective farm laborers and secure unrestricted access to agricultural resources. This atrocity remains one of the most horrifying crimes against humanity of the 20th century.
Under government orders, special requisition squads confiscated all grain and food supplies from the population. Households faced punitive fines in kind. Villages unable to meet the impossible grain quotas were placed on “blacklists,” which meant total blockade and starvation for the entire community. Leaving Ukraine was also prohibited.
By June 1933, the death toll reached its peak. In many cases, bodies were dumped into mass graves outside villages, as there was no one left to bury the dead. Instances of cannibalism were documented.
A new historical video, created by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory ahead of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor, explores the causes and consequences of the 1932–1933 famine. This video concludes a series covering the three man-made famines that Ukrainians endured under Soviet rule.
The video was produced in collaboration with Dyvaky Production Studio and includes archival photos and footage from the Central State Audiovisual and Electronic Archives.
