The 700R4 transmission was equipped in cars between 1982 to 1993. The main aim was to improve the car’s performance and fuel economy. To achieve this, redesigning the entire transmission, with more gears would be more expensive and time-consuming. So, a transmission system called the Overdrive was introduced.
Overdrive is used to step-up the gear ratio in a car. This overdrive is mounted between the transmission and propeller shaft. The device got the name Overdrive because it provides a speed ratio over that of the higher speed ratio. Luxury cars have automatic transmission equipped with overdrive to improve the smooth riding experience.
Overdrive has certain advantages. It helps in achieving high cruising speed with low engine speed. It makes less vibration and noise. The wear of the engine and other accessories are reduced on the usage of overdrive and better fuel economy can be achieved. Further in this video, we will be talking about working of the overdrive and what happens when they are enabled and disabled.
