STORYLINE:
People in Majdal Shams, a town in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights gathered in a central square to celebrate the end of Syrian president Bashar Assad’s rule after a stunning rebel advance reached Syria’s capital Damascus on Sunday.
“I hope it is a new beginning for Syria,” said Hiba Albenee, a 41-year-old Syrian from Damascus who fled Syria after the 2011 revolts against the regime there.
For some of the residents here who consider themselves as Syrians under occupation, it is a hope the end of Assad’s rule will bring the chance for the Golan Heights to reunite with Syria.
“We now are really in hope that the Golan Heights will return back to Syria, with the big hope that we were waiting for for 57 years,” said Shahadi Nasrallah, a 57 year-old resident of Majdal Shams.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it, a move not recognised by much of the international community, which views the territory as occupied.
A later ceasefire agreement created a demilitarised buffer zone between the two countries’ territories, prohibiting military presence or activity from either side in the area.
United Nations peacekeepers have patrolled the demilitarised buffer zone since 1974.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that Israeli forces had — temporarily — seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights established by a 1974 ceasefire agreement, after Syrian troops abandoned their positions.
