The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Faculty Executive Committee will hold an emergency meeting Wednesday to "discuss events related to the protests on campus," according to the university's website. On Tuesday morning, police detained dozens of people on UNC's campus while trying to break up an encampment of pro-Palestinian protesters. Protests continued throughout the day despite police efforts. The already tense situation at UNC-Chapel Hill escalated Tuesday afternoon after the American flag was lowered and replaced with a Palestinian flag on the main quad. Dozens of police officers intervened to restore order.
One person was also arrested Tuesday during a pro-Palestinian protest on N.C. State's campus. The emergency meeting is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
