The Date is a pillar of the Rolex catalog, coming to market in the 1950s and continuing production until just recently. While it earns its name after its signature feature, the calendar display located at 3 o’clock, the Date wasn’t the first Rolex watch to offer this mechanism. That honor goes to the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, which debuted in 1945 during the brand’s 40th anniversary Jubilee.
When the Datejust came to market, it was the first self-winding wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date mechanism. That complication has since become a fixture of the Rolex portfolio, although it’s hard to imagine any of the watches produced by the brand without this signature feature.
Datejust vs. Date
Both models are similar in design, offering a variety of traditional dress watch features, including several dial color options, bracelet types, and bezels. The date is even situated in the same place at 3 o’clock, just below the brand’s iconic Cyclops magnifier.
Both watches offer the same functionality. The Datejust and Date both employ Rolex’s waterproof Oyster case, complete with water resistance up to 100 meters/330 feet. Additionally, at the heart of both watches beats the chronometer-rated Perpetual movement with self-winding.
What sets these popular watches apart is the size of the case. The men’s Datejust traditionally measures 36mm in diameter, while the Date measures 34mm. The Date is also typically positioned as a more affordable option than the Datejust.
Lastly, as of 2021, the Oyster Perpetual Date is no longer in production, while the Datejust remains a staple of the Rolex catalog. As of the filming of this video, the company’s Datejust portfolio includes 41mm, 36mm, 31mm, and 28mm options.
If you’re interested in adding a Date watch to your collection, pre-owned is currently the best option, and Bob’s watches has one of the largest selections available on the secondary market. Rolex has indeed resurrected discontinued watches in the past. Only time will tell if the Date is permanently retired.
HOW TO SET THE ROLEX DATE
If your watch was produced before the invention of the Quickset function, the instructions on how to set your Rolex Date will vary slightly. Aside from that small exception, the Date operates much like any other watch with a calendar display.
Step 1: Unscrew the crown and pull it out to the first position.
Step 2: While in the first position, rotate the crown until the correct date appears in the display window.
If your watch is vintage and does not have a Quickset function, you will not be able to adjust the date separately from the other hands on the dial. In that case, the hands need to be rotated past midnight to advance the date to the next day.
Step 3: To set the time, pull the winding crown to the second position until you hear a faint click. The seconds hand will come to a complete stop.
The seconds hand will not come to a complete stop on all Date watches. Some vintage models do not offer this feature. However, rotating the hands while the crown is in the second position will still allow you to adjust the hour and minute hands.
Step 4: Turn the hands until the correct time is displayed on the dial.
During this step, it’s important to keep AM and PM hours in mind. The Date mechanism will switch over after the hour hand has advanced past midnight twice – or every 24 hours. If you accidentally advance the date mechanism too soon, simply repeat the previous steps.
Step 5: Once the desired date and time are displayed on the dial, screw the crown back into the case to reestablish the waterproof seal. If you skip this step, your watch may not be protected against moisture and dirt.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date is easily one of the brand’s most versatile and affordable options. But what it lacks in the additional 2mm it makes up for with timeless style and a coveted chronometer-rated movement with self-winding and Rolex’s iconic waterproof Oyster case. It’s ready to go anywhere you roam and look exceptional while doing it, too.
