In this lesson, you will learn about Newton's second law of motion in physics. Newtons 2nd law describes how forces and motion are connected. Specifically, forces cause motion to change, that is, forces cause objects to accelerate. The famous equation F=ma mathematically shows how forces, mass, and acceleration are connected. Note that a force is not needed for motion occur once it has already begun. Rather, forces in newtonian mechanics cause the state of motion to change. That is, forces cause objects to speed up or slow down, or they cause objects to change direction, which is also an acceleration.
