Item Description Notes
Backpack Recommend approximately 30 - 35 liters. If you need more room than that, you may be packing too much.
Hat for sun Sun will generally be behind you, so baseball caps are usually no good unless combined with a hood or buff. Hiking hat or bucket style had, combined with the Outdoor Research Echo Hoodie provides excellent sun protection
Jacket (warm - fleece or down) Evenings in spring and fall can get cool/cold. A down or fleece vest is a good option for an extra layer of warmth
Knit cap for cold Not necessary for summer, late spring or early fall
Pants (evening) Lightweight, evenings can be cool/cold in spring and late fall.
Pants (Walking) Lightweight hiking pants or athletic pants, jogger type
Phone
Power Adapter (European) 25 watt adapters are available. Bring 2 meter cable as outlets are often near the floor and won't reach top bunk.
Rain Jacket Poncho works better for walking in the rain, but end of the day may be better to have jacket for walking around town.
Rain Poncho
Shirt (warm layer) Warm base layer or sweater that can be worn over or under other items. Prefer wool as it resists odors
Shirts (evening) Evening type shirt if needed, double up for cold weather
Shirts (walking) Prefer long sleeve, lightweight for UV protection. Dry fit type shirts.
Shoes (evening) Lightweight shoes that allow your feet to breath.
Shoes (hiking) Recommend trail runners rather than boots.
Shorts (evening) Shorts for warm weather that would be comfortable for sitting in a restaurant
Shorts (walking) Running shorts or hiking shorts. Running shorts are more comfortable and easier to wash and hang dry.
Sleeping Bag Winter season requires a cool weather sleeping bag. Spring and Fall can use lightest weight travel sleeping bag or heavy liner. Summer is hot and only needs a liner.
Sleeping Bag Silk Liner This is optional but is nice on hot days when it's too warm for a regular sleeping bag
Socks Generally wool socks or wool blend are best. I like the 1/4 length so I don't get a tan line on my calf.
Sunglasses Any that keep sun out
Underwear Lightweight, 2 or 3 pairs. If you wear for hiking, they will be washed every day and line dried. Two pair is fine as one is drying, the other is worn in the evening and next day. Rotate every day.
Deodorant Travel size
Earbuds Wired don't need to be charged, but sometimes you will need to charge your phone at the same time you want to listen to music. Perhaps better to have wireless earbuds.
Earplugs Use if needed
Eye Mask Use if needed
Flashlight or Headlamp Not necessary unless you plan to walk in the early morning. Can make due with cell phone light in albergues. Sun comes up around 6 - 7am in spring/summer and not until 8am or so in fall.
Nail Clippers Toenail clipper can double for fingernails
Needle & Thread Travel size, for blisters
Pain meds Ibuprofin for inflammation, Acetamenophin/Paracetymol for sore throat, fever, aspirin for headaches. I generally have all three and prefer aspirin for most pain, but ibuprofin works best for pain in feet, knees and hips from walking. There are pharmacies in every town (marked w/ green plus sign) and they have blister packs with higher dosages than in the US.
Shampoo or Soap Travel size shampoo or hotel soap
Shower Sandals Waterproof sandals for shower, if needed. Can also double as evening shoes if going ultralight
Small stone Traditionally, pilgrims will carry a small stone with them and lay the stone down at the Cruz de Ferro around the fourth week
Sunscreen I don't use because I wear long sleeves and hat, but bring what you want
Toothbrush
Toothpaste Travel size
Towel Lightweight towel, fast drying (packed inside toiletry kit)
TP or Wipes Travel size, wipes can be dried out for light weight travel and soaked with a little water when needed. There are bathrooms in every town but sometimes there may be a need to go between towns.
Trekking Poles I don't use poles and they are not necessary if you pack light, but some people like them
Vaseline or Blister Stick I don't generally use but a little vaseline is good for moisturizing feet, hands and face when weather is dry.
Water Bottle Lightweight, aluminum or plastic. There are water fountains all along the way to refill. You don't need to carry a lot of water with you, generally 500 ml - 1 liter is fine.
