Jürgen Stroop was born as Josef Stroop on 26 September 1895 in the town of Detmold, then part of the German Empire. His father was a police officer and his mother a "near fanatic" religious Roman Catholic, who in childhood subjected her son to physical abuse.
The First World War began on 28 July 1914 and the following month Stroop joined the German army. He fought on the Western Front but in October 1914 was wounded in the left shoulder. In July 1915, after he recovered, he was sent to the Eastern Front and remained there almost until the end of the war. The First World War ended on 11 November 1918 and for his services during the war, Stroop was awarded Iron Cross 2nd Class. In December 1918, Stroop was released from the army with the rank of sergeant and returned to his hometown of Detmold where he worked in the land registry office. In 1923 he got married and the marriage produced 3 children.
