If you see yellow greasy scales on your newborns scalp, it is something very normal called as cradle cap. It is believed that the influence of the maternal hormones in a child’s body in the first 6 to 9 months causes this conditions. Popular myths like it is because of the head wear or is it because of the child not being watched properly are probably untrue. It is a self limiting condition and dos not require any treatment. You need to refer to your paediatric dermatologist if you see the rashes persisting for 6 to 9 months. If you see the child is unusually scratching or uncomfortable or at very young age they cannot itch but they may rub their ears on the scalp. if you see the child suffering from eczematous rashes in sometime cradle cap cannot be an entity alone, it could be part of atopic eczema. In these three conditions, you need to reach to your doctor. This requires you to use a mild baby shampoo and make sure to keep the scalp free from those flakes, gently rubbing with a baby comb. Some people also prefer mineral oil to remove the flakes.
