'Rookie William Byron's First Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Race in the #24 Car'
Rookie William Byron begins his first race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, driving the #24 car, which was previously driven by Chase Elliott and legend Jeff Gordon who retired in 2015. Byron's first race in the #24 car is in Can-Am Duel 1 at Daytona International Speedway. Earlier in the day a practice session was held for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Alex Bowman earlier in the week captured the pole for the upcoming Daytona 500, therefore he started 1st in Can-Am Duel 1. Byron who started 3rd spun and hit the wall on lap 40 which brought out the second caution. His #24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was towed to the garage and he finished 18th, which gave him a 33rd position starting spot for the Daytona 500. Denny Hamlin qualified 2nd for the Daytona 500, therefore he started 1st in Can-Am Duel 2. Chase Elliott in his new car, the #9 NAPA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Hendrick Motorsports, won Can-Am Duel 2.
