Sovereign base areas in Cyprus, unlike other British bases overseas, are actually British Sovereign territory. They were established when Cyprus became independent in 1960. Thousands of Cypriots live within the SBAs, the areas have their own police, administration and are custom-run, like a little piece of Britain. SBA Police Maritime Unit patrol the waters of the Sovereign base areas, 258 working around Dhekelia and Akrotiri. The vital part of the SBA authority is based at Episkopi garrison, a civilian body with the responsibility of running that part of Cyprus. There is no formal border so that Cypriot residents can move freely between the too. However, at the Eastern sovereign base area in Dhekelia, the SBA custom officials maintain border crossings.
