Union law minister and Arunachal Pradesh MP Kiren Rijiju rubbed several high-profile people the wrong way by calling the collegium system “opaque”, or in layman's terms, not transparent. Some former judges have described the comment as “unjustified.”
Rijiju said, “The primary task of a judge is to deliver justice to the people. What I see as a law minister (is that) half the time of the judges is spent on deciding who would become the next judge rather than giving justice.”
The Arunachal MP was speaking at an event in Ahmedabad and took no punches while saying that there are a bunch of 40-50 lawyers who have created a “monopoly” in the Supreme Court just because they speak good English.
However, the Union Minister has come under fire from judges after making these statements. Former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur said, “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others.”
Retired Delhi high court judge RS Sodhi said that simply criticising the collegium system may not be enough when no better alternative is being presented.
