Lange (1830-89) was a skilful and prolific German composer of salon music. He wrote several 'concert mazurkas', which unlike his drawing room pieces, use split octaves and other bravura effects. This 'Bell mazurka' is also known as 'Chapel in the wood'. The strong third beat of each bar from the mazurka rhythm often resembles a chiming bell.
