White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in Washington, D.C., on Friday that the Biden administration was “aware” of the evacuations in Springfield, Ohio, following a bomb threat and that local police are investigating the situation. On Thursday, the government of Springfield evacuated its city hall, two days after Donald Trump repeated a false claim that put the city at the centre of a national debate over immigration.
"Due to a bomb threat that was issued to multiple facilities throughout Springfield today, City Hall is closed today," the city government said on social media. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue told local media the threat came from someone who claimed to be a local resident and mentioned frustration with immigration.
In the Friday briefing, Jean-Pierre said that it was “extremely sad and concerning” that a community was facing this type of “danger and vitriol.” Referencing remarks from U.S. President Joe Biden, she added that there is “absolutely no place” in American political discourse for “this type of vitriolic, smearing, hateful language.”
At an earlier White House event celebrating Black excellence, Biden referred to Jean-Pierre as a “proud Haitian-American” and that the attack on Haitian migrants “has to stop.”
