R511: Instructional and Performance Technologies Foundations
Spring 2023, Dr. Curt Bonk
Indiana University Bloomington
This video provides an overview of the “Great Media Debate”—originally attributed to Richard E. Clark and Robert Kozma—and considers its implications for today’s educators. It is remarkable that after 40 years, the debate continues to have a profound impact on various academic circles concerned with educational media. We explore the philosophical foundations on which the original scholars built their arguments (and counterarguments) and their connections to the manifold views of other educational technology scholars that surfaced in the debate’s wake. Finally, we offer conclusions about the most pressing issues facing today’s educational practitioners and instructional designers.
