STORYLINE:
Monday marks the anniversary of the failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet that forced the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, into exile in 1959.
To mark the day, parallel demonstrations organised by Tibetan exile groups were held in various capitals including India, Kathmandu, Greece and New York, which were also used to protest at Beijing's hold on Tibet and China's hosting of the Olympic games.
In India, hundreds of Tibetan exiles began a six-month march from India to Tibet in protest, but were banned by Indian police from marching.
One activist said some of the exiles had been issued a detention order from the police ordering them to stay at home.
"This detention definitely cannot dampen our spirit. We are committed with the spirit of non-violence," the activist, Tenzin Tsundue said.
Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, speaking at a separate event, accused China of "unimaginable and gross violations of human rights" in the Himalayan region.
However, he added that he had always supported the idea that China should be granted the opportunity to host the Olympic games.
"Since such international sporting events, and especially the Olympics, uphold the principles of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, equality and friendship, (and) China should prove herself a good host by providing these freedoms," he said.
"Therefore, besides sending their athletes, the international community should remind the Chinese government of these issues," he added.
