• Navigation With ECDIS
ECDIS has been accepted and implemented as Primary means of Navigation on all our vessel.
Till date we have only JRC ECDIS ( Model 701B or 901B )on our vessels
a) Vessel fitted with 2 ECDIS,
Primary method of Navigation : ECDIS ( Master ECDIS no 1 )
Back up method of Navigation : ECDIS ( Back up ECDIS no 2 )
b) Vessel fitted with 1 ECDIS,
Primary method of Navigation : ECDIS
Back up method of Navigation : Paper Chart
• Sensors attached with ECDIS
ECDIS facilitates Real Time Navigation. Therefore the significance of Sensor input is prominent
Following sensors are connected to ECDIS on company vessels,
GPS
Gyro Compass
Speed Log
Radar
AIS
Echo Sounder
Navtex
Anemo meter
• Paper Chart vs ECDIS
What is Paper Chart?
What happens, if you draw a course line on top of dangerous wreck?
Does it caution you? Or Alarm you?
Can you Interrogate Paper Chart?
ECDIS displays the information, alerts the USER as per USER input…..
Hence, Alert settings are important
• ECDIS Software Maintenance
ECDIS operating software is issued & produced from JRC ( latest version 56G )
The Software upgrade is done by service technician during troubleshooting and Annual servicing.
Company recently signed up with shore contractors ( JRC / Alphatron ) for Navigation Equipment Annual Service
ECDIS does not have Antivirus
Company procedure is to conduct the IHO DPPC ( Data performance check ) monthly
• IHO DPPC Check
The weekly DVDs comprises of two ENCs (AA2TDS02.000 & AA5TDS05.000) and four checks to allow the Master to see whether software is up to date and if wrecks and shoals are displaying correctly.
The old ENCs with same numbers should be deleted and the new set of ENCs should be installed in the ECDIS prior carrying out the checks. These ENCs do not need permit to load in the system. Follow the instructions as given in the “ECDIS check Instruction for Mariners.pdf” Which is included in the DVD.
• Chart Carriage Requirements
• Procurement of ENC
ADC (Admiralty Digital catalogue) should be installed in Chartco PC.
Plot an approximate route in the ADC and send the route file to GNS ( Ex.DPM ) for quotation via e-mail.
Company screens the quotation and approve for the purchase.
The received permit for the requested ENCs to be installed in ADC.
Vessel to check the route and confirm if route areas are covered by appropriate ENCs and RNCs ( if required ).
If RNCs are being ordered, raise requisition for paper charts for the same cells as well.
• Admiralty Digital Catalogue
• Updating ADC
The updating of ADC can be done by following 2 methods,
Online
Weekly AVCS update DVD
• Updating Of ENC
Updating of ENCs can be done by following ways,
Weekly AVCS DVD
CHARTCO Weekly ENC update
Manual Update
• NP 133 A & NP 133C
Vessel still require to maintain NP 133 A / paper chart maintenance log for back up paper charts
ENC maintenance log NP 133 C to be maintained on all vessels
For Emergency charts ENC 133 A need not maintain.

• Route Checking / Validation
The entire passage plan shall be verified manually by Master in
accordance with related procedures and instructions in this guide and
QSMS manual. Only a completely validated route shall be used for
navigation. For route check in JRC ECDIS, automatic functions
(Safety check / Limit check) are available.
These functions identify a wide range of dangers along the vessel’s
intended route. Any such dangers, if revealed during validation, shall
be rectified by amending the route plan. Route on RNC cannot be
checked using automatic function.
• Look Ahead (Sector & Vector Area)
Look ahead is a provision for predicting movement of the vessel. It is intended
for generation of Anti Grounding alarms, Area Alerts and Navigation
Alarms thus increasing the situational awareness of the watch-keeper in
proximity of the dangers around.
