0:04 In this clip we are going to look at upgrading from Joomla! 3 to Joomla! 4
0:08 Joomla! 4 was released on the 17th of August 2021 and looking at the PHP versions available on that date, PHP 7.3 was the lowest supported version of PHP. Joomla! 3.5 was the first version of Joomla that supported PHP 7 so we will upgrade from Joomla! 3.5 to Joomla! 4
0:33 Always take a backup copy of your website and test that the backup can be restored properly
0:43 Let's look at upgrading from a clean install of Joomla! 3.5 to Joomla! 4 and see if there are any problems
0:52 Logging in to the administration we get the usual messages from a clean install, so we'll just get rid of these to begin with
1:08 The dashboard is telling us that it needs to update to Joomla! 3.6.5 first, so if we click on the 'Update Now' button it will take us to the Joomla! Update component which can also be accessed through the components menu at the top. It reports we are on the Default update channel, it is showing us that we're on Joomla! 3.5 and it is showing us that the next version it can update to is 3.6.5
1:43 We will take this opportunity to change the options. In the top right hand corner click on the options button to take us to the configuration for the Joomla! Update component, and we will change the update channel from default to Joomla Next then click on save and close
2:03 We clear the cache in the top left corner and it reports the same details again of 3.50 to 3.6.5 but we are now on the Joomla Next update channel. Click on install the update and it will download the file and apply it to the website. When upgrading to 3.6.5 it will ask us to confirm the update by entering our username and password again
2:36 Now we are at Joomla! 3.6.5. If we check for updates again it can update again from 3.65 to 3.10.9 which is currently the latest version of Joomla! 3. So install the next update and this time it will update it straight away
3:05 Click on check for updates again and because we are on the Joomla Next channel it gives us this extra tab of Pre-Update Check and it reports any warnings, passes, failures. Since this is a clean install we don't expect there to be any failures so under the Required PHP & Database Settings: Passed section it is happy with everything there but note that PHP version is only required to be greater than or equal to 7.2.5. Currently I'm running this on 7.3.33 but we will see a problem come up later on
3:44 If we look at the Recommended PHP Settings : Warning section then we can see that display errors set to on. We can ignore this at the moment as we are just performing a standard upgrade but if it was a production environment we wouldn't recommend displaying errors
4:09 Once we're happy go to the Live Update tab which tells us we're on Joomla! 3.10.9 and we're going to move to Joomla! 4.1.4. Click on install the update and downloads the package and applies it to the site
4:32 We have updated the site to 4.1.4 and the whole look and feel of the site has changed to the new Joomla! 4 template. We can now run the check for updates again and it says that we've got the latest update. Because we are using live updates it will download the newest update it can apply at the time
5:00 Going back to the home dashboard we will see there is a big red warning message at the top because it doesn't like using PHP 7.3.33 as it is only receiving security updates. I will now update my server to use the latest version of PHP 7 - 7.4.29 and refreshing the home dashboard screen the warning message has gone away, also we have no overrides applied because it's a clean site, Joomla is up to date, all the extensions are up to date and we've got no urgent privacy requests
5:39 That is how easy it is to upgrade from Joomla! 3 to Joomla! 4
