Bovine Ephemeral fever or Three days sickness in cattle is an insect transmitted,noncontagious,viral disease of cattle.
In subtropical region disease mostly prevalent in summer to early autumn when frequent rain and
Speedy wind favor multiplication of biting insects.
Disease characterized by high morbidity may be high as 80 percent and low mortality which is usually around 1 to 2 percent.Another important characteristic of this disease is it severely affect the cattle below 4 years.In young calves disease only moderate.Native cattle breeds
more susceptible than the cross breed cattle.
Disease symptoms:
1.sudden onset of high fever
104'f to 107.6'f
2.Biphasic to polyphasic fever
3.shivering
4.inappetence
5.lacrimation
6.serous nasal discharge
7.drooling
8.dyspnea
9.atony of forestomachs
10.stiffness and lameness
Affected cattle may become recumbent and paralyzed for 8 hours to one week.In most of the cases recovery from disease noticed in three days.so this disease called three days sickness disease.Well maintained fatty Bulls and cows more susceptible to disease and also take long time to recovery from disease (around two weeks).
Treatment and control:
1.single dose of nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs like melox injection very effective in control the fever and lameness.
2 antibiotic inj like terramycin very effective in control the secondary bacterial infection
3.Becomplex inj as supportive treatment helpful in speedy recovery.
4.complete rest and restricted feeding, control the disease.
5.Effective vector control during seasonal rain is the best control measure.
