STORYLINE
Hundreds of protesters set up camp in the heart of London's financial district on Wednesday to protest global climate change.
Environmentalists pitched tents, set up farmers' market stalls, bunting and banners outside the European Climate Exchange building.
The protesters are opposed to carbon markets which they say are not an answer to climate change.
Campaigners of all stripes have seized on the G20 summit as a chance to bring their grievances directly to the globe's top politicians, and the world's assembled media.
Police said they were dealing with an unprecedented security challenge from the presence of a score of world leaders alongside thousands of anti-capitalist, environmental and other demonstrators protesting the impact of the economic meltdown.
Also on Wednesday, one environmental group dumped a giant block of ice near the London venue for the upcoming summit.
The Campaign Against Climate Change (CACC) group said they used the ice sculpture to highlight the melting of Arctic sea ice.
Phil Thornhill, a national coordinator for CAAC, said the G20 was wrong in focusing on the recession.
The "catastrophic destabilisation of the global climate" was more likely to destroy lives and livelihoods, he said.
Meanwhile, police continued to step up security around the Excel centre ahead of Thursday's meetings.
At one point officers carried out a security exercise which saw roads around the centre close for a short time.
Police boats patrolled the river Thames which lies adjacent to the summit venue.
