(3 Feb 2022) Ukrainian marine guard boats and navy ships continue to patrol the Sea of Azov strip near Mariupol port, amid mounting fears of a potential Russian invasion.
Many fear that Russia could put pressure on Ukraine from the sea with Mariupol potentially becoming a target.
Mariupol coast guards patrol more than 300 kilometers of the Azov sea coastline.
Roman Varyanytsyn, a marine guard officer, told the Associated Press that Russian boats are frequently drawing closer to the Ukrainian coastline.
Despite the fact that it is relatively calm now, the coast guards are preparing for the worst.
"If Russian Federation ships get too close to the Ukrainian coast it will to be an armed provocation. According to Ukrainian law, we can use weapons." said Varyanytsyn.
Russia is continuing its military buildup around Ukraine, raising concern that Moscow might invade again, as it did in 2014, and destabilize the Ukrainian economy.
Russian officials deny that an invasion is planned.
