As California struggles to build a short hop high speed rail project to connect LA with San Francisco it's worth taking a look at what other countries are doing. A big concern here is whether to attempt to build a tunnel. Well Switzerland's completed a tunnel through the Gotthard massif in the northwestern Alps. It is one of the continent's most formidable natural barriers, barring the way between northern and southern Europe.

This newly-completed tunnel reaches all the way through the very base of the Gotthard massif, to form the longest and the deepest tunnel anywhere on the globe

If they can do this -- we should be able to handle a tunnel under the San Gabriel Mountains. It can be done.
