Velvet ants are a kind of wasp in the Order Hymenoptera, family mutillidae. Females are wingless and capable of defending themselves with a powerful sting, if need be. They are often referred to as cow killers or cow ants, for this reason but males are winged and do not sting. They are very active insects and fun to watch as they move about. Their coloration is a warning to predators that might make the mistake of trying to eat them. This video discusses their life cycle, defenses, habits and care. Some people on Instagram call me the Bob Ross of bugs and likely it is a bit evident in this video at times. ;) I actively watch for comments and questions. Thank you for watching!
