In his LECTURE (start 0:15:40) Brett Scott gives an intro to the principles of distributed digital databases (aka blockchain) and the main justifications why this is a "better" system. He than looks closer at power relations, governmental structures and techno-
colonial developments in these systems. Using different examples he also explores what happens when information gets commodified using internet of things (IOT) and blockchain technology.
In the following AUDIENCE DISCUSSION (start 1:05:45) several topics are discussed more deeply. For example the aspiration, downsides and chances of the DAO and smart contracts in general; The idea of forking away problems in open source communities without implementing governmental structures; the implications of missing diversity in development communities and biased code; and a lot more...

ABOUT BRETT SCOTT describes himself as “a campaigner, former derivatives broker, and general economic explorer”. Others may call him an an “alternative finance activists” or “financial hacker”.
Undoubtedly he is a keen observer and critical thinker when it comes to financial technology and its societal impact. He writes for publications like The Guardian, Wired, Aeon Mag or CNN.com and published his book “The Heretic's Guide to Global Finance: Hacking the Future of Money” with Pluto Press in 2013.
Furthermore Brett has been involved in various financial campaigns (for groups such as MoveYourMoneyUK, World Development Movement & ActionAid) and is a fellow of the London based Finance Innovation Lab. Lately he published a working paper with the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development titled “How Can Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Technology Play a Role in Building Social and Solidarity Finance?”.
