Between April and August this year, almost 20 000 people who violated the country's immigration laws were deported by the Department of Home Affairs at a cost of more than R50-million.
Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber confirmed this during his Parliamentary question and answer session recently.
Since his appointment over 100 days ago as part of the Government of National Unity, Schreiber promised to address numerous challenges facing the department, including fast tracking visa reforms and tackling corruption within the department.
He also committed to increasing the number of inspections at restaurants, spaza shops, farms and mines by over 50%.
Schreiber joins us this morning to talk more about the state of the Department of Home Affairs and his first 100-odd days in office.
