The Belfort Lion was created to honor the people of Belfort in their resistence against the Prussians in 1870.
The Belfort citadel was one of the many citadels across France built by Vauban who revolutionised the designs of fortresses.He worked as a military engineer during the reign of Louis XIV in the 17th Century.
