(23 May 2021) Survivors of the volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday told how they lost other members of their families in the disaster.
Aline Bichikwebo wasn't able to save her parents as she fled the waves of lava rolling down from Mount Nyiragongo, near the town of Goma.
"We are now orphans," Bichikwebo said, with her baby in her arms.
She said she had lost all she owned. "What we had has gone up in smoke. We don't even have a pot," she said.
Bahati Nsabimana recounted a similar experience.
"I feel very bad about losing both my parents and all those who were with them," he said. "The Nyiragongo volcano burnt everything and they all died."
They were speaking beside of small mound of solidified lava where the flow had come to a halt.
It wasn't immediately clear how many people were killed as a result of the eruption.
Authorities said at least five people had died in a road crash while trying to leave Goma, but cautioned it was too early to give a death toll in the hardest-hit communities.
Witnesses said Goma itself, a city of two million, had been mostly spared after the volcano erupted at night and sent thousands fleeing in panic.
