Michiel De Smet works as a project manager in the New Plastics Economy team at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, UK, where he focuses on expanding the knowledge base on plastics and plastic flows, and on engaging policymakers. Michiel joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to work in the Project MainStream team writing the report The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics. Before joining the Foundation, Michiel worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company for several years. He also has experience with social enterprise management, having completed the OnPurpose leadership program in London, UK, and with fundamental research, holding a Ph.D. in mathematics (research at Gent University, the Netherlands, and Bristol University, UK).
