Whenever I tell people that I'm a social media manager, they ask me: How did you become good at social media?
And the moment I hear this question, I remember everything I have ever done to learn social media.
Let me take you through my journey ⬇️
2013:
◾My cousin created a Facebook account for me (my first ever social media account) - Yes, I was that noob
◾Got to know a little bit about social media, created a Facebook Page, and named it “Pretty Dolls” - Don’t blame me, I was a teenager back then 🥲
◾Then years of exploring, inviting people to like my page, created tons of Facebook accounts with an obsession to grow it, I achieved nothing!
2018:
◾Graduated, created an Instagram account, and became friends with a motivational page admin
◾He approached me to write a bio for his Instagram account. I did it, and he loved it
◾Started writing captions for his Instagram page and it gave me a new hobby
2019:
◾While pursuing MBA, with a hunger to learn more, I joined an internship
◾I learned a lot there: Designing graphics, Building landing pages, Creating a social media calendar, and so on
◾But the best thing my boss taught me was - “You can learn ANYTHING by yourself, everything is there on Google/YouTube”
2020:
◾While the world was fighting the pandemic, I was battling 3 wars at home: my MBA final year, that internship & my hunger to LEARN more
◾I hardly left a free resource on the internet that I was aware of. I still have that Chrome bookmark folder called “Learning Resources” with hundreds of free resources link I created in 2020
◾But I still felt dissatisfied because one, most important thing was missing and it was - Implementing
2021:
◾Started exploring various freelancing gigs sites to get some projects to gain experience and hone my skills
◾Invested in a paid course to take a one step ahead
◾Created my Wix website, and portfolio and started working on my personal brand on Instagram
2022:
◾Left my full-time job to speed up the process and started learning & implementing
◾Started working with a few clients as a social media manager
◾One thing always held me back - self-doubt and it lead to procrastination and overthinking
2023:
◾Finally decided to turn things around and promised myself to overthink less and do more
◾I started working on my personal brand on LinkedIn and kept learning
◾Started getting results and kept experimenting with content creation, and my work processes, invested in mentors and paid courses
So, you see?
❌ It wasn’t just one course
❌ It didn’t take a day/week/month to learn
❌ It didn’t happen by following some cooked advice
❌ It was continuous learning, experimenting, and implementing
If you’re starting today, just know that it won’t happen in a day. But you’ll definitely learn every day.
Embrace learning and keep exploring.
