A team of archaeologists have been investigating one of the most famous caves in Finland. Known as Pirunkirkko, meaning Devil’s Church, tradition says that this 34-metre-long crevice leading into the mountain was a meeting place for sages, who typically used sound to contact the spirit world.
The Z-shaped cave is located in the Koli Natonal Park and there are several other landmarks close by referring to the devil. We have Devil’s Cave, Devil’s Mountain and Devil’s Rock. The mountain peaks are named Ukko-Koli and Akka-Koli, in homage to the pre-Christian thunder god and his consort, which reflects their significance in local mythology.
So now researchers from the University of Eastern Finland have investigated the cave to try and understand their supernatural significance. The new paper has just been published (linked below) and now the secrets of the Devil's Church have finally been revealed. Watch the video to learn more.
