Ahead of Christmas Gardaí raid poteen makers in Connemara, County Galway. I Loved a glass or two maybe three or Four of Poteen (poitín)
Strong Stuff.
An Garda Síochana launched their Christmas clampdown on poteen (poitín) makers in Connemara, County Galway.
They destroy £2,500 worth of the illegal alcohol discovered at a remote makeshift still house in Lettermullen on the coast of southern Connemara.
In time-honored tradition, the moonshine patrol ensured that the do-it-yourself distillery would not be open for production soon.
The seizure brings to 14 that Gardaí have made in the area,
Capturing a total of £6,000 worth of drinks and equipment.
Gardaí believes less poitín is being made in Connemara than in previous years. It is not as sought after as in times past and fewer young people are willing to face the fines for having or selling the illegal brew.
Some older people in Connemara resent the Garda clampdown as they view the distilling of the drink as integral to the area, particularly at Christmas time.
