Bluetooth Speaker Sony SRS-XB23 with EXTRA BASS Review
This arrived in a lift top Sony branded box, the speaker was tightly packed and secured each end with cardboard cut-outs and a protective bag covering it, it comes with a USB to USC-C lead and a stack of booklets covering a multitude of languages along with a quick start/easy setup guide.
First impressions the quality looks and feels really nice, the carrying handle is a nice addition; it weighs around 1.3lb but feels really solid the ends being rubber along with the function buttons, the rubber stopper in the front covers the USB-C port only and pushes back in to give a good solid seal. It has rating of IP67 the six meaning it is dust tight and the seven rating meaning it is protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water between 15cm and 1m. up to a duration thirty minutes without suffering any effects of water damage, I have had it in the bathroom playing while having a shower but have not had it under water although it has got wet causing no problems.
The instructions are fairly straight forward and come with explanatory diagrams to make them easy to follow, after fully charging the speaker I installed the Sony Music Center application to my android phone and linked up the speaker, once it was connected it told me there was a firmware update for the speaker which needed the speaker to be plugged into the power supply to apply so I went ahead and installed that taking around ten minutes.
Once I had updated the speakers firmware I linked it to the phone via Bluetooth and connected to the Sony Music Center application, this is quite good and has a nice variety of adjustments in the settings also allowing you to link to the music on the phone or even Spotify, I have my regular music app I use on my phone so have been adjusting to using the Sony one gradually but it is very good. The power on the speaker is a one press on and one press off rather than holding down for power and pairing as you have on some having a separate Bluetooth button below it, below that you have the play pause button which also doubles for answering calls allowing you to talk and listen through the speaker and I believe when paired with an apple device a long press will activate Siri, below these you have the volume up and down controls along with the battery button which gives an audio of the remaining battery along with a long press activating stamina mode to give a little extra when the battery is exhausted, under these you have the party button for pairing additional speakers along with the stereo pair button.
The sound quality I found to be really deep and solid with the additional bass aspect really giving it a boom at higher volumes, I did find the sound quality far better and richer with the speaker standing rather than being carried by the rope handle or hanging from it, I tested out the Bluetooth range which was very impressive going over 20 meters before I started to see any slight disconnects, the battery life is 12 hours on half volume and I had it running on about 80% volume for eight hours before it needed a charge which I though impressive.
Overall a really nice speaker with a excellent sound, the Sony Music Center application works really well and gives you additional sound control and adjustment along with being a good solid media player.
