Shell Shock - Battle Fatigue - how things used to be: 2 days rest and back to combat; Psychiatric decisions were made w/ a quick glance & intuition: 1954 Army doctrine - reassure 'em & send 'em back.
"You ain't sick --- just got the fatigue." "That explosion didn't rupture your eardrums, so it ain't really a concussion." Seems the real role of mental health in the Military, back in the 50's, was to just get 'em back on the firing line.
Thankfully, Mental Health technology has taken leaps in the last few years, at least recognizing the roles of brain injury, concussions, and the psychological syndromes associated with war & combat. The PTSD model has yielded significant gains in assessment & treatment of the condition.
"The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) visual information does not imply or constitute DoD endorsement."
