The Fingertip Pinch therapy putty exercise can help with developing a strong pincer grasp. By squeezing the putty between your thumb & index finger, you can improve your finger strength and dexterity to perform daily activities like picking up small objects, tying your shoes or buttoning a shirt.
Karen Miller, Physical Therapist Assistant, shows us how to perform the Fingertip Pinch. This can be especially beneficial for children who need a little extra help developing their pincer grasp and overall hand strength. Follow these steps to perform this exercise on your own:
Step 1:
Roll the putty into a rope-like shape.
Step 2:
Use your index and thumb to pinch the length of the therapy putty.
Step 3:
Once you've reached the end, roll the putty back into a rope-like shape and use another finger with your thumb to pinch the putty.
**Remember, if you want to make this exercise more challenging, you can always use a firmer putty.
