STORYLINE:
A year of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants has left the Gaza Strip in ruins, levelling entire neighbourhoods and destroying large swaths of farms across the Palestinian enclave.
Gaza City, the power seat of Hamas’s rule for the past 16 years, has arguably seen most of the destitution, especially the city’s eastern and southern neighbourhoods.
The area around the Shifa hospital, Gaza’s largest medical facility which the Israeli military raided twice, was flattened to the ground, Associated Press drone footage before and after the war showed.
The seaside areas, including the Shatie refugee camp, have also experienced massive destruction, the footage showed.
High-rise buildings overlooking the Mediterranean Sea have turned into rubble, and the seaside thoroughfare - one of the two south-north highways in the Strip - is marked by rubble and destroyed buildings on its sides.
Israel’s military assault on Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7, has stretched for one year, with recent escalation between Israel and Hezbollah and Iran threatens to engulf the entire Middle East.
The Gaza war has killed about 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry, part of Gaza’s Hamas government, does not differentiate between fighters and civilians in its count though it says about half of the dead have been women and children. Israel says at least 17,000 militants are among the dead.
The war has caused vast destruction and displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people, often multiple times.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres told The Associated Press last month that the war has caused the worst death and destruction he has seen in his more than seven-year tenure.
