Elon Musk offered ₹8,000 crore to Wikipedia to change its name.
Wikipedia was founded by Jimmy Wales and is among the top 10 websites globally, operating on a non-profit model. However, Elon Musk and Jimmy Wales had a public clash last year over Twitter's censorship policies.
In October 2023, Elon Musk first proposed the idea, offering ₹8,000 crore if Wikipedia would change its name to “Dickipedia” for one year.
But why did Musk make this offer?
Wikipedia’s parent company, Wikimedia Foundation, runs entirely on donations. In 2022, Wikipedia received $154 million in donations. Elon Musk criticized this, claiming that the platform requests excessive donations. To highlight this, he presented his own offer.
Recently, Musk reiterated his readiness to pay ₹8,000 crore if Wikipedia agrees to the name change.
