Russian forces have surrounded the village of Semashki, south-west of the Chechen capital, Grozny.
For three days the road to the village has been barred to all but those travelling on foot.
There is now a heavy Russian army presence in Semashki.
However, one kilometre away from the Russian command post are fighters loyal to Chechen rebel leader, General Dudayev.
The Russians say that they expect to attack any day now and are very cautious about who they let through their lines.

Our mother is there from Chernorechye. People told us she's there so we're going but for the third day they won't let us in.

Three months into the war in the breakaway republic, both sides are trying to strengthen their positions as they trade fire.
The badly out-gunned and outnumbered Chechen struggle to hold onto their remainig territory determined to fight to the last for their independence and their leader General Dudayev.
