Nordlingen looks like a typical German town with medieval churches and red roofs. But look closer—these buildings are studded with over 72,000 tons of tiny diamonds! Nearly 14.5 million years ago, our Earth was hit by a meteor and the resulting impact today is called the Nördlinger Ries (crater), and the diamonds here (less than 0.2 millimetres) are the result of the same asteroid, which slammed into this region of Bavaria. This town is built inside a meteorite crater. The impact formed Suevite rock, containing glass, crystals, and diamonds. When someone climbs the narrow staircase of Nordlingen's Gothic church tower, they'll see sparkling lights, even during the day. The entire tower is made of Suevite stone, which contains many tiny diamonds.
