Here's one of the ways that I create settings for smaller stones. If I don't want to go through the hassle of making a prong setting or I want something a little more sturdy, this is the design I often turn to.

Materials You'll Need:
(x1) 5-8mm Cabochon or Faceted stone
(x1) Segment of 18 Gauge, Dead Soft Wire
28 Gauge weaving wire
Tools You'll Need:
Chain Nose
Flush Cutters
Hammer
Anvil
(Optional) Dowel, pencil, bail making pliers
