Good morning and welcome to today's UK weather forecast for Sunday 16th May 2021.

Today: An area of low pressure will be sitting over the top of the country so we can expect a very unsettled day with thunderstorms and torrential showers breaking. Central, northern and western Scotland may have fewer showers but even here some showers are possible. Hail, thunder and lightning are likely in the heavier downpours with a risk of "flash flooding" in places. Temperatures will be cool at 10C to 16C.

Tonight: Showers should generally fade away although parts of southern and southeastern England as well as north west England could keep a few showers going all night. Generally most places will turn dry. Temperatures will be relatively mild at 5C to 8c.

Tomorrow: Sunny spells and heavy showers again. This time the showers are focused on central and eastern regions with the west having fewer showers perhaps. More thunderstorms are likely in the east. Temperatures stuck at 10C to 16C

Outlook: More showers on Tuesday but perhaps not quite as violent with a slight transient ridge giving us a rather drier day for Wednesday. Temperatures remain cool.
