Julio Reyes gave his first guitar recital at the age of 12 at the Old First Church, San Francisco, and the following year, was an award winner at the International Agustin Barrios Guitar Competition in Mexico City. At age 14, at the invitation of the Paraguayan government, he traveled to South America to perform guitar recitals on radio and TV throughout the country.
During his senior year of high school, he performed Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the late Calvin Simmons and the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. The following year he received a scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied with George Sakellariou and David Tanenbaum.
His CD, “Heart Strings” received rave reviews. Classicalguitar.com stated that, “Reyes plays sensitively and with exquisite musicianship”. Richard “Rico” Stover, noted Barrios historian commented, “Julio Reyes’ beautiful interpretations of Barrios reveal his unique Paraguayan heritage and insight. His CD (Heart Strings) is a gem for those who love the music of Mangore.
Aside from giving recitals, Julio has given lectures on the life and music of Barrios at Conservatories of Music and Colleges in the U.S. and Cuba. He is also an accomplished symphony conductor and has led Members of the Vienna Philharmonic, The Manaus Symphony of Brazil, The Dubrovnik Symphony in Croatia and multiple youth orchestras in the US, Paraguay, and Cuba. In 2009, he led L’Orquesta D’Solis, Prince Albert of Monaco’s private orchestra, in the opera, Fay Yen Fah, at the Monaco Opera House.
