Family: Euphorbiaceae
Plant: Dragon Bones Cactus
Binomial name: Euphorbia lactea
Appearance: The Dragon Bones Cactus (Euphorbia lactea) is a striking, upright succulent with angular, ribbed stems that resemble the vertebrae of a dragon, hence its common name. It often features three- or four-sided stems with wavy edges adorned with small spines. Its coloration varies from vibrant green to variegated patterns with cream or white streaks. Despite being called a "cactus," it is technically a spurge plant and produces a white, milky sap when cut.
Habitat: Native to tropical Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka, Euphorbia lactea thrives in warm, arid regions with plenty of sunlight. It naturally grows in dry, rocky soils where drainage is excellent. It is adapted to withstand drought and poor soil conditions, making it an ideal plant for xeriscaping.
Cultivation: This plant is commonly propagated through cuttings, as seeds are rare. It requires a well-draining potting mix, often supplemented with sand or perlite, and is grown in pots or directly in the ground in climates with little frost. Dragon Bones Cactus thrives in full to partial sunlight, making it perfect for outdoor gardens or bright indoor spaces.
Uses: Euphorbia lactea is popular in landscaping due to its dramatic, sculptural appearance. It’s also widely used as a decorative houseplant in modern interiors and xeriscapes. In some cultures, it is planted as a boundary or hedge plant due to its spiny stems, which deter animals and intruders.
Care: Dragon Bones Cactus requires minimal care, making it a favorite among low-maintenance plant enthusiasts. It needs infrequent watering—only when the soil is completely dry—to prevent root rot. Fertilizing once every two months during the growing season promotes healthy growth. However, care must be taken to handle the plant with gloves, as its sap can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested.
Varieties: There are several notable varieties and cultivars of Euphorbia lactea. Some popular ones include the variegated forms with striking white and green patterns, as well as the crested variety (Euphorbia lactea cristata), which forms fascinating, fan-shaped growths. These variations enhance its appeal as an ornamental plant, offering unique textures and shapes for plant collectors.
