STORYLINE
The French government was getting ready to evacuate more citizens than ever before from Lebanon on Sunday.
Commander Bertrand Bonneau of the French navy said this operation is one of the biggest undertaken since the hostilities began.
"In fact we will board a total number of 2300 passengers," he said.
The French warship Siroco arrived at Beirut port on Sunday morning to take on board French and foreign nationals who have chosen to leave the country.
Evacuees expressed their sadness at leaving Lebanon.
"We're really really sad about this one because it's not something we wanted to do, and I hope that we're going to come back very very soon to Lebanon," said a young woman.
"I'm sad to leave my country in such conditions. It's a very nice country. We have been subjected to aggression from everywhere. Then it's not easy to travel for 36 hours and to leave his family and his parents under shelling and under the Israeli aggression," another evacuee said.
The evacuees were expected to arrive in Cyprus on Monday.
More than 54-thousand people have been evacuated from Lebanon through Cyprus since fighting broke out last month, Cypriote authorities said on Friday.
