You will need a Putty Knife (or Chisel), A Brush (Kitchen Brush is fine), Denatured Alcohol, and a Scrub Pad.
Tree sap (also known as pitch) comes out of wood as a natural process. Whether it's timbers, 2x4s, 6x6 posts, or even a piece of wood art, its to be expected and not to be feared. Wood sap will occur when the wood has reached its hottest temperature point, and more will not come out unless a temperature greater than that is reached again. So for instance, if you have a 110-degree day, you may get sap leakage from the wood, but unless the wood heats higher than 110 at a later date, you will get no further leakage.
With this in mind, it's a great idea to clean sap in the fall after a hot summer. If you get cold weather, the sap will harden and become easy to clean.
There are three steps to cleaning up the wood or timbers, and the tools/ingredients are common and affordable.
